Night of Comedy

Last night seemed to be a big night for comedy when it comes to politicians. Did you ever think you'd hear comedy and politicians in the same sentence during this years election? Not me.

Final Debate Wrap Up...

The new map indicates that Sen. Obama would have 277 electoral votes, with Sen. John McCain, the Republican candidate, amassing 174 electoral votes; 87 electoral votes are still up for grabs in several states. In order to win the presidency, a candidate needs 270 electoral votes.

Let me start off by telling you a very funny story from last night. Before Laura went to bed, she and I were reading stories. It was raining cats and dogs outside and the satellite had gone out. I was really afraid that I would not be able to see the Debate, but I left the TV on to see if it would eventually come back up. Lo and behold, right at 8:00pm the clouds cleared and the debate started. So, when Obama and McCain walked out on stage I told Laura that Mommy wanted the man on the left to win (my left). She asked what his name was, so I told her Barack Obama. She asked what he was going to be winning and I tried as best I could to explain what a debate was. I went on to tell her that the ultimate goal was for Barack to win the Presidency of the United States. Her response was "Well Mommy, what happened to John F. Kennedy?" I could not help but chuckle. She was so serious with her question. You see, over the summer we took Laura to Dallas and visited the site where JFK was assassinated. We explained to her that he was a President a long time ago. It's funny, she remembered him being a President, but didn't understand that he was no longer alive. It's amazing what kids retain.

Now, let's get back to the topic at hand. I was impressed with the final debate last night. I thought both parties did a good job. Of course I think Obama looked like a President above and beyond McCain but I also think they both did well. Obama seemed to take the criticism well and remained calm, cool and collected, when you know all Obama really wanted to do was reach across the table and deck McCain. I didn't like McCain's grimacing face. I thought he looked like a wax figure at Madame Tussuad's Museum. McCain seems like such a angry old man to me. That anger and attitude that he portrays is even more reason as to why we can't have him in the Oval Office. I would never feel safe that he would do what's right for the American people because of his erratic behavior and the anger he possesses. I guess if I were tortured for 5 years in a prison camp, I would be angry too. However, I'm afraid of that anger. I don't think it's a good attribute to have as President of the United States.

What did you think about the conversation regarding Joe the Plumber?
I didn't like that McCain even brought the subject up. However, I like the fact that Obama was very up front and very clear to Joe as you'll see in the following video. Obama didn't tell Joe what he wanted to hear, but actually what his stance was on raising taxes. He didn't waiver to get a vote and he stood his ground. That's what we need in a President. We may not like all of the choices a President makes and some of the choices may take some growing pains. But to me it's worth a few growing pains to get this country back on the right track. I don't think it's going to be an easy road and I do think there are going to be growing pains but 8 years from now when we elect a new president (yes, I think we'll have Obama for 8 years), I think our country will be in much better shape than we are in right now.
Joe The Plumber

What did you think of Bob Schieffer as moderator?
I thought he was fantastic. I thought he asked some really hard questions of both candidates and did his best to keep them both on track and answer the questions that were asked instead of diverting into another topic of conversation.

What new channel did you watch the debate?
I watched it on 2 channels, NBC and CNN. I ended up watching the last 1/2 on CNN because I really like their score cards and their squiggly lines for undecided voters in Ohio.

Rolling Stone Article ~ Make Believe Maverick

I found the following excerpt taken from a story in the Rolling Stone Magazine, entitled "Make Believe Maverick", to be so true of how I feel about John McCain's qualification to be the President of the United States. - Even those in the military who celebrate McCain's patriotism and sacrifice question why his POW experience has been elevated as his top qualification to be commander in chief. "It took guts to go through that and to come out reasonably intact and able to pick up the pieces of your life and move on," says Wilkerson, Colin Powell's former chief of staff, who has known McCain since the 1980s. "It is unquestionably a demonstration of the character of the man. But I don't think that it is a special qualification for being president of the United States. In some respects, I'm not sure that's the kind of character I want sitting in the Oval Office. I'm not sure that much time in a prisoner-of-war status doesn't do something to you. Doesn't do something to you psychologically, doesn't do something to you that might make you a little more volatile, a little less apt to listen to reason, a little more inclined to be volcanic in your temperament."

Also noted in the same article ~ At least three of McCain's GOP colleagues have gone on record to say that they consider him temperamentally unsuited to be commander in chief. Smith, the former senator from New Hampshire, has said that McCain's "temper would place this country at risk in international affairs, and the world perhaps in danger. In my mind, it should disqualify him." Sen. Domenici of New Mexico has said he doesn't "want this guy anywhere near a trigger." And Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi weighed in that "the thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded."

What matters most.......

I watched a youtube video today from a Steel Workers of America employee. He is an avid Obama supporter who took the courage to stand up among a large crowd and talk about how disgraceful it is to consider not voting for Barack Obama because of the color of his skin.

What Americans need to understand is at the end of the day what matters most is the character of the man running for the highest office, the Presidency of the United States of America. It should not matter what the color of his skin may be, but what values he holds within his soul. I can't think of a better person than Barack Obama. He is who I think can hand over our nation to our children and our children's children knowing he did everything in his power to make this county a better place.

I'm very fortunate. As a child, my parents taught me, as well as my brother, about equality. I can say, that as a citizen of this great nation, I don't care what color Barack may appear on the outside (might I mention his mother is white and his father is black), but what matters most is what he believes inside, what his goals are and what he stands for. I can not think of anyone more sincere than Barack to bring the change we so desperately need.

We only have 31 more days until the General Election. I hope that you will get out there and vote. Look at the issues, look at the track records of both Obama and McCain, make an informed decision on who you feel is best suited for the position and VOTE! Your vote does count more now than ever before.

Giving credit where credit is due.

I'm still not voting for the McCain-Palin ticket. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Sarah Palin last night. I thought she did a really decent job. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole night, just waiting for her to really fall on her face, but that didn't seem to happen.

Saying that, I feel Biden still won the debate. I thought he stayed on point with the questions that were asked of him, he was very knowledgeable and surprisingly very respectful of Sarah Palin. He could have gotten down and dirty with her on some of the issues, but I liked that fact that he remained a gentleman. I just about lost it when he started to choke up about not knowing if his children were going to make it - referring to the accident his 1st wife had when she and his daughter were killed, leaving his two sons to take care of.

What did you think of the debate?

Why can't she just answer one question out right?

Keep in mind, if McCain were to win the presidency (God forbid), Sarah Palin is one heartbeat away from becoming our President. Is this who you want running our country?

Sarah Palin can't name one Supreme Court Decision?

Sarah Palin can't name one newspaper she reads?

Compare Biden's interview with Katie Couric, to that of Sarah Palin.

Tonight is definitely going to be must see TV with the Vice Presidential Debate. I'm interested to see what comes out of her mouth. By the way, the debate is on this evening - 9PM Eastern, 8PM Central.

It's been a while......

I've taken a while to make a post to my blog, but it seems like things have been full speed ahead since Hurricane Ike hit. It seems several people are still without power. I was out of work for a week because we did not have power restored until the Saturday after the storm. Residents of Galveston Island were finally allowed back this past Wednesday. Thousands are still without power, and may be for several more weeks.

Keith Urban @ The Grand Ole Opry ~ September 27, 2008

Well, today is my Birthday and for such a special occasion, Tim planned a trip to Nashville. We left last night and arrived around 6:00. Because we were so tired last night, we just went to dinner and came back to hit the sack. Today we have been out shopping and walking around downtown Nashville. Every restaurant/bar has someone singing in them. Laura bought a Hannah Montana microphone earlier in the day, so she was singing away every time she walked by a bar with music. Tomorrow is Demo Day for Northern so we will visit all of Tim's stores for the day. Laura and I actually like Demo Day, because we get to ride go-carts that we get to ride while Daddy works. We seem to have a great time. After Demo Day, we will be going to see Keith Urban @ The Grand Ole Opry. I look so forward to it. I think he will put on a great concert. Sunday we will head back home and start the week over again.

Today is also the 1st Presidential Debate. Of course Tim joked a few weeks back by saying "Well I know what we'll be doing in Nashville". At the time I said "no we won't be watching the debate". Well, it's 7:11 Central time and we're sitting here waiting for the 8pm debate. Surprisingly, Tim is interested in watching it to. I think most of it has to do with the 700 Billion Dollar Bailout that is going out. I think he wants to see what's going on with the economy. Last night he was up watching Cramer on Mad Money to see what all is happening with the economy. Tim LOVES that show and could watch it all day long!

Well, I better get going so I can get ready for the debate. Talk to you guys later. Take care!

I promise I had nothing to do with Operation Code Pink last night!

Based on all of the protesters in the audience last night at the RNC, I would say it didn't go as smoothly as McCain would have liked.

"McCain Votes Against Vets" Demonstrator

I have several issues with McCain's speech, some of which I'll share.

McCain makes the following statement ~ "I’m running for President to keep the country I love safe, and prevent other families from risking their loved ones in war as my family has." If I'm not mistaken, isn't he one of the ones that voted to send our families into a country that we had no business being in, in the first place? He, along with President Bush and other members who voted for the war, have put thousands of families in harms way and for what? I keep hearing "we will be victorious in Iraq." Victorious over what? We invaded a country on the grounds that they had weapons of mass destruction, which they did not! We went after Saddam Hussein because he was considered a threat. Not to say that Saddam was not a threat, but Saddam was not the one responsible for 9/11. Once again we went to the wrong place at the wrong time looking for the wrong guy and for all the wrong reasons. It's an unjustified war and a war that needs to come to an end. Not later, but as soon as responsibly possible. My comments do not mean that I don't support our troops. I support them 110% if not more. However, I don't now and will not ever support those who voted to send our fellow Americans into a war without just cause!

McCain also says in his speech "I will ask Democrats and Independents to serve with me". How can he expect our service or our support after he bashes us? I don't know how you can go for 19 months bashing the views of Democrats and Independents and expect much support. If you can't show unity before the election, why would we think it would be any different after the fact. McCain specifically says he "will veto every bill that has earmarks". I'm afraid of what all McCain will end up using his veto power on. I'm afraid of the power he'll use period!

The biggest difference I noticed between the DNC and the RNC is that the DNC reflected people of all different race, age, religious background and sexual orientation who all came together in Unity to celebrate such a historic opportunity for our country. It was a celebration of what could be ~ Hope For Change and a Change We Can Believe In. I did not get that from the RNC. The RNC reflected one negative attack after another. I also didn't think McCain did a very good job at outlining what he plans to do for this country. He made specific reference to Palin's lack of experience by saying he "can’t wait until I introduce her to Washington". He can't wait to introduce her, because she's never been. I heard someone say the other day, "could you imagine, if McCain becomes President, Palin is just one heartbeat away from that spot". That's a scary thought to me. She is not ready to hold the position of the President.

Thank goodness we're only 59 days away from the Election!

Code Pink Demonstrators escorted out of RNC

By the way, the 1st Presidential Debate will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008.

McCain Picks Who?

Sarah Palin? Never heard of her. I know now that she was elected in 2006 as Governor of Alaska, but other than that, I don't know anything about her. I'm surprised by his choice, since he's given Obama such a hard time about experience. I guess he figures he can teach her a few things between now and election time.

On another note, did you hear that Cindy McCain's 1/2 Sister is backing Obama? That's a nice surprise. Attached is the article:
